Carbon Credit Program

Earn Carbon Credits While Building a Sustainable Dairy Farm

Turn Cattle Waste into Income & Clean Energy

Bhumijaa Farmer Welfare Foundation is helping dairy farmers transform livestock waste into clean energy, organic fertilizer, and additional income through a structured Carbon Credit Program.

This initiative combines climate protection with farmer income growth, creating a practical and scalable solution for rural India.

What is a Carbon Credit?

A carbon credit is a certificate representing the reduction or removal of one metric ton (1,000 kg) of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.

1 Carbon Credit = 1 ton of CO₂ emission reduced or removed.

Carbon credits allow communities to:

  • Protect the environment
  • Increase farmer income
  • Attract climate finance into rural areas
Carbon credits can be generated from multiple sectors

Sectors Eligible for Carbon Credits

The Dairy Sector Carbon Credit Initiative

Through Bhumijaa Farmer Welfare Foundation, we work with dairy farmers to create a climate-positive and income-generating rural model using biodigestors (biogas plants).

The objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock waste while providing direct economic benefits to farmers through:

  • Clean energy production
  • Organic manure generation
  • Carbon credit income

This program integrates sustainability, income enhancement, and climate action into one practical rural solution.

Challenge Faced by Dairy Farmers & Our Solution

Challenge Our Solution

The Challenge Faced by Dairy Farmers

When cow and buffalo dung decomposes in open areas, it releases methane (CH₄), a greenhouse gas nearly 28 times more harmful than carbon dioxide.

This results in:

  • Increased greenhouse gas emissions
  • Loss of potential energy resource
  • Dependence on LPG and firewood
  • Increased fertilizer and energy costs

At the same time, rural households spend heavily on LPG, firewood, and chemical fertilizers, increasing both financial burden and environmental impact.

Our Solution: Biodigestor-Based Circular Model

Bhumijaa promotes biodigestors at the farmer level to create a closed-loop sustainable farming system.

Process flow:
• Cattle dung is fed into the biodigestor
• Methane gas is captured and converted into biogas
• Biogas is used as clean cooking fuel
• Remaining slurry becomes organic fertilizer
• Methane emissions are avoided and measured
• Emission reductions are converted into carbon credits

This process transforms cattle waste into three valuable outputs:
clean energy, organic manure, and climate finance.

How Carbon Credits Are Generated Farmer Income Impact Environmental & Social Benefits

The carbon credit process follows international standards:

  1. Biodigestors are installed at dairy farms.

  2. Farmers feed dung daily into the system.

  3. Methane is captured instead of escaping into the atmosphere.

  4. Emission reductions are calculated using standard methodologies.

  5. Third-party verifiers validate the impact.

  6. Carbon credits are issued under recognized international standards.

  7. Credits are sold in voluntary carbon markets.

  8. Revenue is shared with farmers and reinvested to scale the program.

For a farmer owning 3 cattle, conservative estimates show:

• Emission reduction: ~5 tons CO₂e per year
• Carbon credit value: ₹1,000–₹2,000 per ton
• LPG replacement: 1 cylinder per month (₹950 per cylinder)
• Slurry production: 8–10 tons per year

Annual Benefit Estimate

• Carbon credits: ₹5,000 – ₹10,000
• Gas savings: ₹11,400
• Slurry value: ₹8,000 – ₹12,000

Total Annual Benefit

₹24,000 – ₹33,000 per farmer

This creates a stable additional income stream while improving soil health and household energy security.

The program delivers long-term community and environmental benefits:

• Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
• Clean renewable energy at household level
• Reduced dependence on fossil fuels and firewood
• Improved soil fertility through organic manure
• Better sanitation and waste management
• Increased farmer income and resilience
